Genre:
“The help” goes under the genre drama, beause in apartheid it was a lot of dramatic happenings, and this movie put much emphasis on the drama in the country like the maids that were used, and that they were used so badly. But as the director of the movie said “I think of it as a drama. Well life is frama, and the most dramatic parts of my life and the most painful parts of my life have had tons of humor in them, just for survival. The humos in The Help is the same, to get balance” - Tate Tylor, December 15th

Theme:

Setting:
The film takes place in Jackson, Mississippi. The film is supposed to be in the early 1960`s during apartheid.

Plot:
Aibileen was a middel-aged maid in the home of Elizabeth. She was black and treated with no respect. She had spendt all her life raising white children, cooking and cleaning someones other home for a small salary while her own children were at home in very bad conditions. Minny was an other maid, who was helping in Hilly Holbrook`s house. She was beeing treated very badly by Hilly, but Hilly`s mom wanted her to feel comfortable and beeing able to use the toilet indoors if she want to. One day it was pooring rain outside, she was allowed to use the toilet indoors. But Hilly was very against this, and fired Minny as their maid. Hilly warned all families against Minny, so it made it impossible for her to get a new job. Later she gets offered a job as Celia Foot`s help. She was beeing outcasted by the social group, because Hilly belived that she had stolen her man. No other maid would work for her so Minny was her only hope. Minny was beeing treated with respect and Celia looked at her as a equal, unlike Hilly.
Eugina Phelan, also named “Skeeter”, was strongly againt racism. Ever since her maid Constantine, who had raised her even mor than her own mother had, was fired by her mom, she wanted to make a change. It was againt the social moral to support the whites. But she collected courage and started to write the draft to a book with the stories of Minny and Abilieen`s treatment as a maid.

Charateristics:
In this movie, the it was tree different kinds of persons. There was the whites, who were shallow, shelfish and accepted racism. The black ones, were used as helps, and did not have much to say in the socciety. And the last type was Skeeter, she was the only one who actually stood up for herselv and supportes the black ones, she wanted to make a change, and she did.

The blacks could not use a foul laguage, and had to call the whites for ma’am. But the whites could say anything they wanted to the blacks

My opinin:
I think this movie is made to make us get a better view of aparthied, and make us think about how it was then
